Elliott defeats incumbent in House 22 primary

From the Greenville News

Greenville lawyer Jason Elliott repeatedly criticized S.C. Rep. Wendy Nanney for missing votes in Columbia as part of his campaign to unseat the four-term incumbent.

Judging by the results of Tuesday’s Republican primary, it was an effective attack.

With 98 percent of precincts reporting at 9:40 p.m., Elliott had captured more than 58 percent of the vote to become the Republican nominee for South Carolina House District 22.

The victory should make Elliott the district’s next representative since he’s unopposed in November’s general election.

During an interview Tuesday night after unofficial returns had come in, Elliott cited his exposure of Nanney’s Statehouse attendance record as one reason for his “underdog” victory.

“Voters responded to the message that as an elected official you have to work,” Elliott said from The Community Tap, a taproom in Greenville’s North Main area where he celebrated with supporters. “And I’m going to work every day to earn the trust of the voters of District 22.”
